Trip to Poland and YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 21 from Pam and Wendell, May 19, 2019

Dear Friends,

We are in Poland for two weeks and it is really interesting to be back after being away for almost an entire year, post-Fulbright. I am grateful for the invitation to return to Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan as an artist-in-residence for two weeks, and to have the opportunity to do so many diverse and creative things; hearing amazing young pianists from the Frederic Chopin University and playing the 3rd in my series of benefit concerts for The Michael Gilmor Fund for Leadership and Empowerment for Fulbright Polska in Warsaw, as well as giving workshops, classes and a new concert with pianist Stan Breckenridge in Poznan are among the highlights. We also discovered two beautiful parks in Poznan! (scroll down for pictures)

As always, we have also created a new fusion of art and music. Today's MOMENT features Wendell's painting "Purple World" (acrylic on canvas 30 x 40) with Pam's arrangement of The Beatles song "If I Fell (In Love with You)." Wendell says" I especially wanted to reflect the beautiful descending lines in the second half of the piece in the motion of the images." We hope you enjoy this.

Sending you greetings and best wishes from Poznan!

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 18 from Pam and Wendell, April 28, 2019

Dear Friends,

Having completed 18 MOMENTS of Music and Art, Wendell and I feel like we are  just beginning to know what we are doing!  First of all, how have 18 weeks of this year already gone by!?

We thought you might like to hear a little about our process --- it is fun, frustrating, exciting, discouraging, surprising, and always enlightening!  This is an experiment for us in many things, but most importantly, the fusion of music and art. Most people don’t realize that Wendell had never done any type of video editing before starting this. So for Wendell, this involves not only learning a new medium, but figuring out how to fuse his work with the music.  For me, the challenge and fun is in just sitting down, without any fancy CD recording equipment or editing, to create a satisfying performance of a favorite piece . Often times, I am seeing the painting Wendell has chosen while I play.

One constant in our collaboration is that I want to see less of me and more of Wendell’s beautiful art, and he says he wants to see more of me playing.  So, each week, we are trying to figure out how best to balance this! We hope you enjoy this week’s fusion of Chopin’s beautiful Waltz in C-sharp Minor, with Wendell’s “Grove of Green and Gold” –painted in Poland last year(acrylic on paper, mounted on panel 10 x 10)

Best wishes,

Pam and Wendell

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 17 from Pam and Wendell, April 21, 2019

Dear Friends,

For week 17 we have chosen the "Raindrop" Prelude (Prelude in D-flat Major, Op. 28 No. 15) by Chopin to be paired with Wendell's painting called "Nocturne No. 8 in D-flat Major" (acrylic on canvas, 30 x 30, 2013). wendellmyers.com pamelahowland.com

This "moment" is a study in dark and light contrasts - full of both brooding and light, in the music and in the art -- somehow fitting for Easter and Passover.

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 14 from Pam and Wendell, March 31, 2019

Dear Friends,

This video for the last day of March/beginning of April features my arrangement of the beautiful song "Til There Was You" by Meredith Wilson (you will know it either from the musical "The Music Man" or from an early Beatles recording of it)-- paired with Wendell's glorious painting "Treeline #1" (acrylic, watercolor pencils, markers on paper, mounted on panel, 10 x 10, 2018) wendellmyers.com pamelahowland.com https://youtu.be/E4-slszd2E8

We are especially excited about this particular creation, as Wendell has discovered some new ways to fuse the music and art. Ultimately, we hope it gives you an uplifting moment of music and art, as you start your new week!

Sending you all the best,

Pam and Wendell

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 13 from Pam and Wendell, March 24, 2019

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 13 from Pam and Wendell, March 24, 2019

Greetings!

This week features a very blue fusion (both in palette and mood) with Wendell's evocative painting, "Nocturne No. 6 in G Minor," paired with the melancholy spiritual, "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child." Wendell says about it: For week 13, I chose the painting "Nocturne No 6 in G Minor" because, although it was painted specifically in response to a different piece of music, the austere, almost desolate landscape fully reflects the emotional character of "Motherless Child." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCS6SIgYk0I wendell myers.com

We wish you a good week ahead!

New Article & YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 12 from Pam and Wendell, March 17, 2019

Dear Friends,

This week features an opinion piece I was asked to write for the Winston-Salem Journal, published on Thursday, March 14, which expresses some of my feelings about music in our lives. https://www.journalnow.com/opinion/columnists/pamela-howland-music-can-help-heal-our-divisions/article_e8f7cde9-5d5d-5e29-b60e-2faf7bb7281d.html?fbclid=IwAR23Ngnhhbn15-xKpYZUDz7hc5dDV75WHHRJm8tv0j4EeCqK42agKruhTs0

Today - St. Patrick's Day - we present the beautiful song from "The Wizard of Oz," - "Over the Rainbow." Pam's arrangement is fused with Wendell's "Gold and Rose" painting (30 x 30 acrylic on canvas, wendellmyers.com) -- and we hope you enjoy this 2 minutes and 34 seconds!

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 10 from Pam and Wendell, March 4, 2019

YOUR MOMENT OF MUSIC AND ART WEEK 10 from Pam and Wendell, March 4, 2019

Welcome to March!

This month we depart from Chopin for a bit, and focus on some of Pam’s arrangements of favorite tunes. Today for Week 10, we are combining her “Amazing Grace Celtic Medley” with Wendell’s “Six Trees with Yellow Sky” (acrylic on canvas, 12 x 30 from 2011, www.wendellmyers.com). https://youtu.be/SZ7Hskbz1TU

She says, “I arranged this medley for my Dad who was very proud of his Scots heritage, using several favorite Celtic tunes -Shenandoah, Loch Lomond, Auld Lang Syne, and anchoring them with Amazing Grace. I love playing this piece because sometimes I have the feeling of not being sure which one I am playing (because they all have pentatonic melodies), and they all take me back to my childhood.”

Have fun listening for bagpipes, fiddles, and even a music box as you journey across Wendell’s landscape.

Best wishes,

Pam and Wendell
