Carols for a Blue Christmas is holiday music in a different key;
just the most recent example of the elegance and life Pamela Howland
breathes into her music.
The 16 carols may be traditional holiday fare, but the arrangements
Ms. Howland has chosen give them a melancholy air. These are not the carols
of a roaring fire and marshmallows; they are the carols of a midnight walk
among crusty boughs. Under Ms. Howland's crisp and expressive hands her piano
conjures falling icicles tinkling to the ground as a shoulder brushes by.
These are familiar carols freshened by the influence of jazz and blues and made new
again. In the end these carols are uplifting, a mix of major and mind, memory and
music both moving and reassuring, of broken hearts softly mended by the promise of
another day.
