Pamela Howland
is a gifted pianist who breathes life and vitality into classical music for audiences of any age or background. Vivacious, imaginative, sensitive and just a trifle unconventional, Ms. Howland is that rare classically trained performing artist who thrives as an entertainer.
Using the lecture-recital format she honed while a professor at Wake Forest University, she fashions her performances to fit the listening level of her audience. She seeks programs that depart from a traditional classical format so that her audiences leave both educated and entertained, having learned something about themselves as well as the music.
Trained at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music, where she received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature, she performs extensively as a soloist and chamber musician.
Highlights include numerous recitals in the United States, featured recitals in Paris and Vienna, a tour of Colombia, South America, live solo appearances broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio and National Public Radio in New York and North Carolina, guest appearances at the Chautauqua (NY) Institution's Summer Music Festival, and appearances with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Charlotte Repertory Orchestra, and Wake Forest University Orchestra.
She is a recent addition to the National Speakers/Performers Bureau roster of the
National Alliance Française,
and has been included in the North Carolina Arts Council's Touring Artist Directory since 2002.
Ms. Howland has taught piano and music history at Wake Forest University (1988-1998), Salem College (2005) , The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1986), Winona State University (MN - 1984-86),
Monroe Community College (NY - 1984) and served on the accompanying staff at The North Carolina School of the Arts (1986-87) and The Hochstein School of Music (NY - 1983-84).
In 1996 she founded an independent record label, HM Classics, and has produced 10 CDs in 10 years, including her most recent HOMELAND: Pamela Howland Plays Chopin (2006).
Her
recordings are an eclectic mix of five solo programs (especially featuring the music of Chopin, Debussy, Bartok, American composer Paul Schoenfield, and others), three Christmas recordings,
a collaborative disc of African-American Spirituals and Artsongs with tenor Richard Heard, and a disc of French Poetry and Music with poet and law professor, Dick Schneider.
